This day and age we all try to save money and cut cost where we can in all aspects in life. Why should your home be any different? Well, it shouldn’t. Below we will cover some home tips that can save you money and protect the biggest investment that most of us will ever make in our lives. Concrete Builders LLC has been building custom homes and doing remodels with a combine experience of over 20 years. You can take it from us we have seen it all and have built it all.
Tip 1 – Your furnace is a very important piece of equipment in your home. Always change out your air filters once a month. Pick a date and make it routine. This will improve your airflow and dust control in your home. If you haven’t cleaned your air ducts, this is a small investment to make sure you have clean air running through your house. This should cost between $200-$400 depending on the size of your home. There are a few companies that will even record and take pictures of your ducts before and after. You will be amazed of what your ducts will look like.
Tip 2 – Winterizing your home and getting prepared for cold weather. Although we live in Texas and it is normally hot and humid, we do get a couple of months of clod freezing weather. Don’t be caught off guard this season and do these small steps that can save you hundreds of dollars. Turn off your sprinkler system and drain the line. This takes 5 minutes maximum. Wrap the exposed pipe and all hose spigots. At times running your water (very lightly) in a sink overnight can help as well.
Tip 3 – Have you ever had trouble or thought hmm my dryer is not drying my clothes the was it use to. Well it could be as simple as changing your lint trap that is normally located at the front of the dryer. If that still doesn’t work go check the lint duct that blows out your house. At times they are so backed up the exhaust has nowhere to go and can also be a fire hazard if not cleaned properly.
Tip 4 – Something as simple as changing the batteries in your thermostat can make the difference between being hot and cold…yes, thermostats have batteries.
Tip 5 – If you are a DIY person, before you dive into a project. Give a professional a call to ask for advise and or to make sure what you are about to do doesn’t require any engineering that will cost you more money after the fact.
Tip 6 – Water heaters are always replaced when it is too late and you have a big problem on your hands. Remember to always bleed your water heater once a year.
Tip 7 – How often should you water your lawn…During the summer you should water 5 days a week during the winter you should water 2-3 days a week.
Tip 8 – You should replace your batteries in your smoke alarm and your carbon monoxide detector once a year. Although the batteries may last
longer, you should be safe than sorry and get them replaced.
Tip 9 – You should install weather stripping and add a door sweep. If you want to test the airflow put a candle near the door and see the draft blow the flame in the direction of travel.
Tip 10 – Close your damper, hot and cold air flies up chimney when you leave the damper open. After you light your fire place make sure to close the damper to avoid higher electrical bills.
For the most part the Tips mentioned are simple things you can do to avoid costly repairs and can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars for your home.
